Joy Division were an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, UK.
The Joy Division was a known name for areas in concentration camps (WW2) where female prisoners offered their services to the German guards.
According to music critic Jon Savage, the band "were not punk but were directly inspired by its energy".
Despite the band's growing success, vocalist Ian Curtis was beset with depression and personal difficulties, including a dissolving marriage and his diagnosis of epilepsy.
Lack of sleep and long hours destabilised Curtis's epilepsy and his seizures became almost uncontrollable;
early on the morning of 18 May 1980, Curtis hanged himself in his kitchen.
A great band!
